Grub2, the new boot menu installed by default with Ubuntu 9.10

Ubuntu 9.10 ships with the new GRUB (Grand Unified Boot Loader 1.97beta) in plain words its the software that boots the operating systemyou choose when you boot the computer. In earlier versions of Ubuntu /Grub to change the menu on the grub screen, one had to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. In the new system this a little different from just editing the one file.

First be root sudo su
Edit the file /etc/default/grub
Change the GRUB_DEFAULT value to number your default operating system

I have set GRUB_DEFAULT = 4 for Windows 7

Google Wants to Speed Up the Web With New Protocol

Google has just announced that it is working on a new protocolthat will minimize latency and speed up the Web experience for users.SPDY (pronounced "speedy") is not meant to replace HTTP, the protocolthat allows Web servers and browsers to talk to each other today, butit does augment HTTP. The new protocol incorporates features likemultiplexed streams, request prioritization and HTTP headercompression.

Google has already developed a prototype Web server and a version of Google Chrome with built-in SPDY support.

Google claimsthat pages loaded 64% faster in lab tests in which the research teamdownloaded the top 25 websites. Now that the SPDY team has developedworkable prototypes, Google decided to open up the process and issoliciting the "active participation, feedback and assistance of theweb community."
Intoday's announcement, Google stresses that SPDY is not a replacementfor HTTP. It uses HTTP methods and headers, but it overrides the partsof the protocol that manage connections and data transfer formats.
Google will soon release its open-source SPDY-enabled Web server.The source code for the SPDY-enabled version of Chrome can be found here.

Creating a Faster and More Secure Web

According to the SPDY white paper,the project's goals are to reduce page load times by 50%, minimizedeployment complexity and avoid the need for website owners to make anychanges to their sites to implement SPDY. Instead, all the hard workwill happen in the client and the Web server.
The team also wants SPDY to allow many concurrent HTTP requests torun across one TCP session and to make SSL the standard transportprotocol.
Google clearly has an interest in making the Web experience as fastand secure as possible for its users. One of the reasons Googlereleased its own browser was to get every other browser developer tofocus on speed again. SPDY is even more ambitious. With SPDY, Googlewants to change one of the most fundamental protocols on the Internet.
According to Google, these are the basic improvement of SPDY over HTTP:

Multiplexedrequests. There is no limit to the number of requests that can beissued concurrently over a single SPDY connection. Because requestsare interleaved on a single channel, the efficiency of TCP is muchhigher.
Prioritized requests. Clients can requestcertain resources to be delivered first. This avoids the problem ofcongesting the network channel with non-critical resources when ahigh-priority request is pending.
Compressed headers. Clients today send a significant amount of redundant data in the formof HTTP headers. Because a single Web page may require 50 or 100subrequests, this data is significant. Compressing the headers saves asignificant amount of latency and bandwidth compared to HTTP.

using winamp we can control / mange the iPod easily and quickly.

A web tool hailed as a significant rival to search giant Google has gone live to the public.

Wolfram Alpha is called a computation knowledge engine rather than a search engine and wants to change the way people use online data.

It aims to give people direct answers to queries rather than send them to other sites where they may find what they are seeking.

The system is the brainchild of British-born physicist Stephen Wolfram.

Wolfram Alpha was unveiled in late April and since then has been publicly demonstrated and some people have had a chance to run queries through it.

Typically the results it returns are annotated pages of data rather than a simple list of other sites that might help resolve a user's query.

For example, if asked about the weather in Manchester it would present a graph of average temperatures, rainfall and other salient data.

The computational horsepower behind the main site works out answers to question as they are put by grabbing data from databases and consulting feeds of relevant information.

Wolfram Alpha can be asked known facts, such as the height of mountains, or be asked to generate new information such as up to date figures for a nation's GDP.

It can also handle complicated mathematical queries, plot statistics and produce charts of natural events.

The data it consults is chosen and managed by staff at Wolfram Research who ensure it can be displayed by the system. Behind the scenes Wolfram Alpha has about 10,000 CPUs spread across five data centres that it draws on when generating answers.

During a demonstration at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, Dr Wolfram said: "Our goal is to make expert knowledge accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime."

Dr Wolfram played down talk that the system would be a Google killer and instead presents it as a way for people to get more out of the information on the web.

The final tuning and testing of the system was webcast live during the weekend before the official launch.

Prior to the start of the webcast and final testing, Theo Grey, co-founder of Wolfram Research, said: "If we do melt down when we go live it will not be for lack of effort, or any sort of naive idea of how many queries we might get. It will be because of overwhelming response."

Both subversion and subclipse cache usernames and passwords. Sometimes it is necessary to manually change the authentication information, e.g. to clear the password after it has changed, or occasionally, to update the username.

Anyone that uses subclipse (the subversion client for eclipse) that has needed to change the username or password for a stored repository, knows that there is no obvious way to do this. Luckily, I ran across this post. Unfortunately, it left some important details out.

If subclipse is setup to use JavaHL (which it is by default: check in Preferences > Team > SVN > SVN interface), then the passwords are stored in the same location as if the command-line svn tool was used. For unix-based systems (or using the command-line tool under cygwin), this is in ~/.subversion/auth/svn.simple. On windows it is in c:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\subversion\auth\svn.simple. It looks like there is one file per repository in this directory (the filename is a long hexadecimal number). This file contains your username and password.
On the other hand, if subclipse is configured to use the JavaSVN adapter, the .keyring file mentioned in the post appears to be located in the eclipse directory (not the workspace, the actually directory where the eclipse executable is found) under configuration/org.eclipse.core.runtime/.keyring. This is a binary file and hence must be deleted.

A few complaints: (1) I don’t like the fact my password is stored plaintext in a location where others frequently have at least read access to (this is especially true in Windows) (2) if the keyring is stored in the Eclipse directory that means all users share the same authentication information. That means someone else on the computer could access my subversion repositories as me!

This seems like a huge security whole.

How to save Linux Boot Loader

Needs to Reinstall Windows & wants to Save Your Linux Boot Loader....

Save your Linux boot loader for windows boot loader (for any linux Operating System)

sudo su root
dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/drive_c/ubuntu7.img count=1 bs=512
now open windows c:\boot.ini file and append following line

c:\ubuntu7.img="Load My Ubuntu boot Loader"

Note:

/dev/sda stands for your hard drive it might be different use according to your hard disk.

If you don't know you can get it from the following command

sudo su root
cfdisk

/media/drive_c is the mounted file system for your Drive C

If you are not able to mount, then use the path ~/home/ubuntu7.img and you can take back up of the file using any USB Device. and then switch to windows and put it into the boot.ini and modify it

Tested with Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 and Fedora 7, but it will work for any Linux OS

How it works? => This will generate a file named ubuntu7.img which contains starting 512 bytes of your hard disk.
